I have seen many roman architecture including colosseum in Rome none of them fascinated me like Pont du Gard. It is the ambience what is mattering so much. Amidst of the nature, cling to lush green hills this ancient 50m high Roman aquaduct mesmerized me.
We were coming from Arles, near the spot we have seen two directions both are showing directions of Pont du Gard. The bridge is accessible from both the bank. Without knowing anything we took the left one. And yesss, it was right decision. Although right bank is more happening there is museums, learning centre, movie show, but the left one is more scenic.
I have walked along the bank, past the bridge leaving behind the crowd of tourists and a serene beauty of nature unveiled. The dark green hill, river bent behind the forest. it was just rained, a smell of wet grass was coming. No sounds but one bird’s call time to time was interrupting the calmness.
We have spent hours sitting there, climbed down near the river, wished I could rich the bridge by canoe
We have crossed the bridge, stopped several times to enjoy the view from top. River Gard cutting through white rock is amazing.
Really somu, the way you describe this ancient structure amidst nature is a treat for our eyes…..
